Freeman & Abelson

We are living at a time of change. As powerful forces disrupt entire systems of care for the vulnerable, many providers work harder when they need to work differently.

We are partners in transformation, helping organizations mobilize to become innovators and leaders in a new era.

Stephen Freeman and Danny Abelson first collaborated on the remarkable transformation of YAI, New York State’s largest provider of services to people with disabilities. Today they work jointly and separately helping change agents in government and provider organizations.

After helping to build programs widely known for their excellence over a 35-year career, Stephen Freeman took over as CEO a time of grave crisis in 2011. Mr. Freeman engineered a turnaround from crisis to success, engaging stakeholders in innovative and energetic effort.

Since the remarkable turnaround Stephen has developed a thriving practice focused on organizational transformation. He consults with NYS Government, private not-for-profit organizations and performs program evaluations with an eye toward early detection of system needs and innovative strategies for change.

Stephen installed Creative Director, Danny Abelson  (The Abelson Company to assist in the transformation of YAI.   In under three years the agency was re-positioned as innovative and forward-thinking, returned to fiscal health, its standing with government and donors and families restored.

In the last year or two the pair have been sought-after by those looking to move the field forward – from New York State’s OPWDD Transformation Panel and leading agencies, to an unfolding national initiative that Stephen is now engaged with, consulting on the 2016 Presidential campaign in the areas of healthcare policy and planning.
